Mother Nature gives us a cue to begin spring rose care when the forsythia bloom. Usually mid - April stimulates new growth, and promotes a healthy rose bush. Donít be intimidated, roses are very forgiving.
Bushes:
Begin by cutting out all dead wood, diseased, and spindly canes. Remove any canes that cross, to open up the center of the bush and promote good air circulation. Moderate pruning will suit most garden roses, leaving a bush with 5-12 canes, 18-24 inches high. Cut at a 45 degree angle, 1/4 inch above an outside bud. The direction of the bud determines the direction of new growth.
Climbers:
Removal of dead wood and shortening laterals can be done in spring. Leave unpruned until after first bloom, then cut back unproductive canes.
Feeding:
We recommend feeding your roses with Espoma Rose Tone. Consider mulching with Farardís Aged Pine Bark to help retain soil moisture and add organic nutrients to the soil as it decays. Your rose growing success is important to us! We look forwarding to helping you select roses that fit into your personal gardening style.
