2013 All American Rose Selections Winner!
Each year, AARS selects the best of the new rose introductions for this award. Tested in 23 gardens across the nation for two years, AARS winners embody the character characteristic desired by every rose grower. Plants are judged on color, fragrance, flower production & disease resistance. This year, only one rose was selected for this prestigious award.
Francis Meilland (HT)
Perfect 5" shell pink blooms of 60 - 65 petals blush to near white as they open. Boasting excellent disease tolerance for a hybrid tea, Francis Meilland exudes the classic fragrance of a garden rose. Named in honor of the famed breeder's 100th birthday, this is only the 10th stand-alone winner of the distinguished AARS award.

Hybrid Tea
The most popular class of modern roses is the Hybrid Tea. Easily recognized by the large, symmetrical, well-formed blooms, these roses are excellent for cutting. Flowers are borne on long stems either singly or with several side buds. The plants usually grow from 3 to 5 ft high. Preventative disease control may be necessary. Winter protection is recommended.

Blooms profusely with little care and give you clusters of flowers that come in massive waves throughout the growing season. They are excellent for landscaping when planted in groups of 3 or more. The plants are usually compact and shrubby. They often offer a higher resistance to disease. Many varieties are now offered own root.

Grandifloras have well-formed buds and flowers similar to hybrid teas and bloom in clusters like floribundas. This type of rose usually grows taller than the typical hybrid tea providing a greater mass of color.![]()

These roses are not true climbing plants since they have no tendrils with which to attach themselves to a support. They have long arching canes with the ability to grow on fences, over walls, through trellises, arbors, and pergolas, if tied and properly trained. These varieties offer a wide variety of flower forms, shapes, and colors. It will often take three years to see their true bloom potential, as they will be working hard to produce canes.

Shrub & Ground Cover Roses
These come in a variety of types that are either free standing or grow horizontally along the ground. They can grow from 3 to 15 feet. Noted for their hardiness, they are usually vigorous and produce large quantities of clusters of flowers. The unique group of roses hybridized by David Austin, often called English Roses belongs to this class. They resemble old garden roses in shape and form but are recurrent bloomers and often have incredible fragrance.

Miniature Roses
Most miniatures bloom profusely throughout the growing season. They are small plants, usually between 6-36". Most are grown on their own root, making them hardier in cold climates. The perfect choice for containers, borders, and adding color to small spaces.

What are the advantages of own-root roses versus roses that are grafted?
Own root roses have several advantages over budded roses; increased winter hardiness, usually virus free, and no suckers to content with. They can freeze to the ground and still spring back from their roots. They have a much longer life span compared to grafted roses. While “own root” roses generally mature at a slower rate than grafted, the advantage of winter hardiness is invaluable.
